Indigent Patient Programs
"...Obtaining
free prescription medications in the USA"
Patients-in-need and Indigent patient programs: In 1991, Americans filled 1.7 billion
prescriptions in retail drug stores at an average cost of $22.44
each. The current estimated cost of the average perscription is
approximately $26.00. According to a study conducted by the National
Council on Patient Information and Education, almost 40% of patients
over 65 take five prescriptions daily, and 19% take at least seven
drugs per day. Almost 60% of elderly Americans are taking five to
seven prescription medications daily, and this can add thousands of
dollars per year to their living expenses. The American Heart
Association began a list of companies offering prescription drugs
for free or at reduced prices. For information on obtaining these
drugs free or at reduced cost (directly from the phamaceutical
company) for indigent patients, or for those on small fixed incomes,

The American Heart Association has
published a list 1,
2, 3 based upon several review articles published
in the medical literature of nineteen pharmaceutical companies
who provide drugs free or at low cost to the medically
indigent. In most cases it takes the actions of a physician or
medical professional to contact the pharmaceutical company
before drugs can be supplied to the physician or to a pharmacy
for distribution to the patient-in-need.

Many pharmaceutical companies will
only discuss this information directly with physicians or
health care professionals. For information on the
participating pharmaceutical companies and their specific
eligibility requirements for these programs, contact the
American Heart Association at 1-800-242-8721 and request the
hand-out entitled "Drugs, Free or Low Cost" (January 1994 or
later edition).
